The short version: your prayers are never recorded, never uploaded, and never read. There is no server full of prayers, because we never built one.
Pray Aloud is a daily prayer app operated by an independent developer ("we", "us"). Contact: [email protected].
Pray Aloud's core feature is praying out loud. Here is exactly what happens when you do:
A small amount of non-sensitive data leaves the device to make the app function, none of it linked to your identity and none of it containing prayer content:

There is no analytics and no crash-reporting service in this app: no usage tracking, no product analytics, no third-party SDK watching what you tap. We do not collect: audio, prayer content, your name, contacts, location, photos, health data, or advertising identifiers. We do not track you across other apps or websites, we show no ads, and we never sell or share personal data for advertising.
Pray Aloud is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
The widget shows the day's verse on its own: the verses are built into it, so it stays right every morning even if the app is never opened. To show anything personal (whether this morning is kept, your total mornings and, only if you switch it on in Settings → Lock Screen & widgets, the initials or names of the people you pray for), the app leaves a small note in a private folder on your iPhone that only the app and its widget can read. That note never leaves the phone. Names are off by default, because a Lock Screen can be seen by anyone in the room. Delete everything on this device clears the note too.
The app has no server of its own, and nothing it sends carries a prayer. Two things talk to the internet: Apple's purchase system (StoreKit, through RevenueCat), to know what you have bought and to buy or restore; and Apple's iCloud, for your invite code and its count (below).
Scripture is never written by a machine. Every verse in the app is the World English Bible, British Edition (WEBBE), fetched and checked before the app was built.
Every notification Pray Aloud sends is scheduled on your iPhone: the morning reminder you choose, and (if you start a trial) one reminder two days before the trial ends, before anything is charged. There is no server to push from. During a prayer, a Live Activity shows the current line on your Lock Screen and ends at your Amen. If you ask, and only then, The Forty writes its forty days into a calendar of its own so the season sits where your days are kept; the app never reads your calendar. All of it stays on the device.
In your words finds a prayer for something you describe in a sentence: one of the sixty prayers a person wrote by hand, matched entirely on your phone. Nothing you type is sent anywhere, stored anywhere, or kept at all unless you choose to carry it yourself. There is no AI involved and no server: the matching is a small on-device index built from the app's own prayers and verses.
Each person has a six character invite code. The code, and one mark for each friend who starts a membership with it, are kept in Apple's iCloud (CloudKit), linked only to anonymous iCloud identifiers that Apple assigns. We never receive a name, an email address, anything you pray, or anything about your purchase. The count is used only to show you how many friends have started with your code and to offer you the reward Apple applies to your subscription. Your own free morning (if you installed before version 2.0), your code and the rewards you have claimed are also kept in your iCloud key value store, so they survive deleting the app; that store is yours, under your Apple ID, and we cannot read it.
When you share your pass, the link looks like prayaloud.app/i/CODE#YourName. Your first name sits after the #, the part of an address a browser never sends to a website, so our site never receives it: it is read on your friend's phone to say who the pass is from. Opening a pass link stores nothing on our site. If your friend taps Paste in the app, the app reads only what they pasted, when they tap.
If you add someone From Contacts, the app shows Apple's own contact picker. Pray Aloud never reads your address book: the picker hands over the one person you chose, and the app keeps a first name, a copy of their photo in its own folder on your phone, and their birthday as a month and day. Nothing else is kept, the contact is never read again, and Delete everything removes the copies.
When you send a prayer to someone, the message contains the prayer's words and a link to prayaloud.app. Nothing about you is in the link or the message: not your name, your walk, or your notes. If the person you send it to has Pray Aloud, the link opens the same prayer in their app; if not, it opens a plain page. We do not know who sent or received anything. If you choose to save the picture of a morning, it is written into your photo library at that moment; the app never browses or reads your photos.
Pray Aloud has no account and no sign-in. We never create a user record for you, on our servers or anyone else's, so there is no account to delete. Everything the app knows about you (your first name if you gave one, your covenant and signature, your walk, every morning you have kept, your journal, the people you carry, the things you are carrying, and your record of answered prayer) is stored only in the app's own storage on your iPhone.
You can erase all of it at any time, from inside the app, without contacting us:
Open Pray Aloud → the You tab → Settings → Your data & about → tap Delete everything on this device, then tap again to confirm.
That wipes every one of those stores immediately and returns the app to the state of a fresh install. It cannot be undone by us, because we never had a copy. Deleting the app from your iPhone removes the same data. What survives: a purchase (Apple holds your receipt, not us, and Restore purchases brings it back), and the few things that are promises rather than data about you: your invite code, the code of a friend who invited you, the rewards you have claimed, and the free morning promised to anyone who installed before version 2.0. They stay so that friends who hold your code are never stranded and nothing is counted twice. None of them holds anything you prayed.
Depending on where you live (including under GDPR and similar laws), you may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal data. Because almost everything lives on your device, the fastest path is the in-app control described above. For anything else, email [email protected] and we will act within 30 days. Data revealing religious belief is specially protected in many jurisdictions; our answer to that responsibility is architectural: we designed the app so your prayers never reach us at all.
On-device data stays until you erase it in the app or delete the app. We set no other retention period, because we hold none of it. We run no analytics or crash-reporting service, so there is nothing of that kind to retain. Apple and RevenueCat hold your purchase record under their own terms. All network traffic uses HTTPS.
If this policy changes materially, we'll update this page and note it in the app. Continued use after changes means acceptance.
